Cognitive Communication

Individuals living with cognitive-communication issues may have difficulty with attention, memory, organization, problem solving, and reasoning.

Understanding Cognitive Aspects of Communication

Individuals living with cognitive-communication issues may have difficulty with attention, memory, organization, problem solving, and reasoning (among other executive functions). Common causes of cognitive impairment include developmental disability, concussion and mild head injury, reptitive sports injuries, more serious acquired brain injuries, some types of stroke, and neurological diseases such as dementia. It is also not uncommon for athletes who have had one of more concussions and military personnel who have been exposed to blasts to experience some sort of cognitive issues.

If you notice difficulty concentrating, frequent headaches, cognitive fatigue, or having more difficulty at school or work, you may want to consider an evaluation. Your symptoms may not be limited to those above. Please consult with your doctor or reach out to us for more information.

Typically, we will gather information about your medical history and specific complaints related to memory, attention, or executive functions. While standardized testing is often involved in our evaluation, we focus on activities that will improve your life participation and not just a score on a test. Therapy might consist of working to increase attention skills, devising or using memory strategies, working on specific problem-solving strategies, or a number of other personalized interventions.
