Information for New Patients

The Center for Communication Disorders accepts new patients as space is available. You do not need a referral from another doctor. Since there is no cost for services provided at the clinic, there may be a waiting list. If there is a waiting list for services, patients will be prioritized based on the following:

  • Time of request (first come, first served)
  • Patient’s access to other services
  • Severity of need
  • Appropriateness for CCD
  • Eligibility for other target programs

Assessments

An assessment frequently called an evaluation, analyzes a person’s communication skills. Assessments are necessary to develop a treatment or therapy plan for any type of speech or language disorder. These will be conducted before treatment begins.

Assessments are conducted at the clinic by speech-language pathologists and graduate student speech-language pathology students

Assessments are scheduled in two-hour blocks. In some cases, an appointment may end early if the evaluation has been completed in less time than scheduled. If more time is required, a separate appointment can be scheduled.

Diagnosis

A communication, swallowing, or voice disorder is a condition that impacts a person’s ability to participate fully in social, cultural, educational, or vocational activities. A client’s diagnosis will guide the client and the clinician in developing an appropriate treatment plan.

Treatments

A treatment plan, also known as a “therapy plan”, outlines the specific needs of the client and states the goals of therapy. Each treatment duration and frequency is determined by the client’s need. The most common treatment schedule is once or twice per week for 50 minutes.

Services and treatments at the CCD are provided by students in the Master of Science in Medical Speech-Language Pathology program at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions, under the direction and close supervision of faculty members who are licensed Speech-Language Pathologists. The students and faculty members work together to plan and implement each patient’s evaluation and treatment plan.
